Two movements from Three Dreams
Sonata for clarinet and piano by Alan Holley
played by Miloš Bjelica - clarinet and Veroslava Jovanović - piano
"In the 1990's I read and was captivated by three novels by the Nigerian writer, Ben Okri. These books of fancy, The Famished Road (1991), Songs of Enchantment (1993) and Astonishing the Gods (1995) led me to the writing of my clarinet sonata, Three Dreams. Okri wove a story that was so dense and at the same time flitted between the real and the unreal, the waking state and the dream state that it was as if he was writing 'my' music.
The first dream is unnamed but is clearly about being in a resting state - one before the storm. Tremor is the title of the third dream and here I wanted to convey a sense of impending doom." AH
