Mariner Music 2008 for solo clarinet by Alan Holley was premiered by Richard Rourke in a series of recitals from June 22 till July 27 2008 at Manly Art Gallery, Sydney in a joint project with the Australian artists Anne Ferguson and Merrick Fry.
"This work came about when Merrick Fry and I were discussing the shared themes for our joint exhibition project at Manly Art Gallery. Merrick was drawing and creating sculptures that reflected on his ideas of the sea and we talked of the hardship that would have been the lot of the early European mariners sailing on the east coast of Australia. These talks led me to write a piece in which I tried to evoke 'watery' sounds and those that might be in the head of a sailor or passenger during a tempest.
During the composition process Richard Rourke was unstinting in his efforts to best realise my music and I thank him for all his technical advice during numerous workshop sessions." Alan Holley.
